Friends for keeps

There are friends who stay only for a season in our lives and there are friends for keeps.

The Bible says in Proverbs 18:24 “there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” and you can thank God if you have them in your life.

These “friends for keeps” are rare to find these days. So when you know that you have some of them in your life, you’ve got to cherish and take care of the friendship you have with them.

This kind of friends are the ones you make yourself accountable to. You can be true and honest with them and share your innermost feelings – frustrations, anger, disappointments, and happiness without hesitation. You are assured that you can be yourself when you’re with them without the fear that you’ll be condemned.

But they are not there to tolerate your wrongdoings. They don’t want to see you ruin your life! They love you, care for you, and protect you. They are just after what is good for you. They are not afraid to tell right to your face of the things you are messing up in your life!

So, how do we find these “friends for keeps”?

1. Ask God – He is the Giver of all good things.

2. Be true to yourself and to other people – it is important that right from the start they get to know the real you because that is the person they will accept for who she or he is.

3. Accept correction – like what I’ve stated above, “friends for keeps” are there to guide you. They want to see you succeed in life and if they see you doing otherwise, you sure are going to get some corrections from them. If you think what they’re saying is true, be humble and follow their good advice.

4. Be pure – when I say “pure”, I mean you want to befriend a person because you think the two of you will click together and not because you have an ulterior motive. A person who values relationship can identify if you are being true to him or her or not!
